The Henry Repeating Rifle was made in 1860 by Tyler B. Henry. Henry created the gun and the bullet and both were named after him. The bullet was called the 44 Henry rimfire and was "the first practical fully complete self contained metallic cartridge". The rifle was the one of the later versions of many attempts of repeating rifles. The 22 short rimfire version was made earlier but it wasn't powerful enough, so he created this one. The 44 rimfire bullet was massed produced, and had a lot of power. It worked by having a bullet with a very small flash pan in the bottom, that would be struck by a pin and ignite the gunpowder in the bullet, sending it forward. The rifle was used in the Civil War, but if it was shot too much on a hot day, then it would overheat. It was also too time consuming to load. The magazine used was just a tube under the barrel that you would have to insert each bullet one by one into and then you would have to use a hollow stick with a spring in it to keep it in place.
After the company ran out of money after the Civil War, it was bought by Oliver Winchester. Winchester wasn't too happy with the sales, so he decided to make another, better rifle. The rifle he came up with was the Winchester 1866. It had a loading compartment right in the bottom of where the other magazine was, it also had a wooden forestock that would protect the person that was firing the weapon. That was the first of many Winchester rifles. They didn't use the name "Model 1866" until a new Winchester rifle came out in 1873(the Winchester model 1873 was also known as "The Gun that Won the West").Before that they only called it the "Winchester".
